PART THREE

do good around you

14

make a difference at work

#514.

Make a treat to cheer up a gloomy Monday. It could be a healthy snack, an old Midwestern pineapple upside-down cake, or a special little box of Scottish shortbread to savor with a hot cup of tea. Any little treat on a Monday will usually brighten the mood in the office and start the workweek off right.

#515.

Send thank-you cards to job interviewers. This small token of appreciation isn't just a karma booster — it may also help you land the job. It's a thoughtful gesture and may make an interviewer take a second look at your resume.

#516.

Set up a company wide recycling program. If your company doesn't have a recycling program, work with your Operations Department to get quotes from local recycling plants and see which one would offer your company the best deal.

#517.

Talk to your company about matching funds. Some companies have a policy that when employees make donations to various charities, they will match the donations. If your company doesn't have this program, talk to your supervisor about implementing one.

#518.

Carpool. Share your ride to and from work with coworkers. Cutting down on auto emissions and the use of fossil fuels are good things we can do for the planet.

#519.

Telecommute. Ask your boss if telecommuting might be an option for you on one or more days each week. This will get your car off of the road, which helps the environment.

#520.

Learn from your mistakes. The main thing is to not feel so traumatized that you give up and stop trying. Use the lessons learned to jumpstart your next effort. The most successful people in the world used their mistakes to learn what not to do and kept on trying until they made a breakthrough.

#521.

Let your employees know they're appreciated. Make sure your workers know they are wanted with congratulatory e-mails when they achieve their goals, or just a verbal acknowledgment when they've had a great week. People are less likely to switch jobs if they feel they are making a contribution that is appreciated.

#522.

Leave an encouraging note. If you notice someone in your office is having a particularly bad day, stick a Postiton her desk with an encouraging message. She will appreciate the kind words.

#523.

Invite the new hire out to lunch. Starting a new job is hard. One of the reasons being you don't know the people with whom you work. Help the new person in your office out and invite him to lunch.

#524.

Make your office an Earth Share workplace. Start a campaign in your company to get the business involved with Earth Share. Participants pledge a certain amount of each of their paychecks to the cause. Visit www.earthshare.org for information.

#525.

Bring in a box of donuts for everyone.

#526.

Practice good cell phone etiquette. Do you really want everyone in the office to hear every word you tell your friend about your ugly encounter with your ex, the wild weekend with the in-laws, or the night of great sex with your new man? Put your phone on the vibrate setting and make a note of who is calling.
